Lord’s Supper: Remaining Elements

The Evangelical Lutheran Synod states that “we continue to uphold the practice of the church down through the years that the remaining elements [of the Lord’s Supper] may be consumed, or be disposed of in a reverent manner, or be saved for future sacramental use.”   (Italics added for emphasis).  (What We Believe, ELS 9, h).

Reverent, a. “Expressing reverence, veneration or submission”

Revere, v. “To regard with fear mingled with respect and affection; to venerate; to reverence; to honor in estimation.”

(American Dictionary of the English Language; Noah Webster, 1828; published by the Foundation for American Christian Education).  The WELS and the ELS are in fellowship and doctrinal agreement.

The consecrated elements must always be treated reverently, in other words, with fear, respect, affection, and honor.
