Please pray for and help the people of Haiti.  They need physical and spiritual help.

It appears that the WELS has workers in the neighboring Dominican Republic, but not Haiti.  WELS Relief does not appear to be in a position to help immediately, but members from the Dominican Republic are assessing the crisis, and may be asking for specific aid in the near future.  Here is a link to the WELS Relief blog for updates on their efforts.

There are also numerous agencies that are working to help in Haiti such as the LCMS World Relief.

Prayer:

Almighty God, we beseech You, show Your mercy to Your humble servants, that we who put no trust in our own merits may not be dealt with according to the severity of Your judgment, but according to Your mercy;

You have made us heirs of Your eternal and great promise:  Increase in us daily the gifts of faith, hope, and love, that we may love all that You command;

In your wisdom, please help the people of Haiti, and give us the privilege of helping them through us.  Move us as your hands and your tongue by helping them in this world, and by telling them the Good News about Jesus for the next.

Amen.

The block-quoted parts of the above prayer are from Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary, excerpts of prayers 106 & 131 on pages 161 & 165.

  1. Time is critical to get emergency relief to the Haitian earthquake victims. WELS Relief is not in country and I aasume LCMS World Relief has minimal on-site personnel and logistical capability, as well. I recommend sending your needed monetary donations to the larger international organizations that have the political, economic, and diplomatic clout to get the aid to these victims faster. Organizations such as Redcross.org, Worldvision.org, and even the Clintonfoundation.org have greater access to governmental, transportation, and logistical personnel in both the US and in country.

    Pray unceasingly for the Haitian people and our Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, and Airman who are deploying to assist these people recover from this devastating disaster.

  2. Thank you Tammy and Paul C for those addresses.

    The Clinton Foundation has an easy way to donate money for Haiti relief from one’s phone bill simply by texting “Haiti” to their text number which can be found on their “Haiti Earthquake Relief” page. Thrivent has a matching program.

    Also, LCMS World Relief appears to be working with their sister church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Haiti (ELCH), on relief and recovery efforts.

    01/15/10 updates:
    — The Together newsletter reports that the “WELS Committee on Relief is in the process of releasing a $25,000 grant to an international relief agency to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti,” and will meet January 16 “to discuss how to allocate incoming donations for relief efforts.”

    — Also, the Lutherans in the Dominican Republic blog has a post about the earthquake and its aftermath:
