Gold in the Far Forest

There was virtually no wind, but every so often cascades of leaves filled the air.  The video below is 60 frames per second slowed down to 24 frames per second.

May God bless you.

Autumn Blessings

IMG_4530

The Lord is merciful and good.  So let us fear the Lord in every season.

We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

— Isaiah 64:6, ESV.

But the Lord is merciful, and sends rain in the Spring and in the Autumn.  Because of Christ crucified and his mercies:

‘Let us fear the Lord our God,
who gives the rain in its season,
the autumn rain and the spring rain,
and keeps for us
the weeks appointed for the harvest.’

— Jeremiah 5:24, ESV.

Every day and every season brings us one ticktock closer to his final return.  For those in Christ, his return will be beautiful.

The Last Hike of Autumn

IMG_3377

These are pictures from the last hike of Autumn.

The warm golden colors of the sunset were a fitting end to the Autumn hiking season.

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”  (Ecclesiastes 3:1, ESV).

The pictures were taken at Governor Thompson State Park near the Peshtigo River in Wisconsin.

May God bless you.

New Blog Design

09 Sept 29-Oct 6 northwoods 250

This is a stream in northern Wisconsin near the Apostle Islands.  Autumn can be a beautiful season of transition and change.  The leaves were just beginning to change color.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven

— Ecclesiastes 3:1, ESV.

May the Lord bless you this Autumn and through all the seasons of change.

New Design

wordpress-logo-32The new blog design has been implemented.  As noted previously, the old posts have remained, but there are issues with some of their formatting.

If there are any questions or concerns about the formatting of an old post or block quote, please contact me.  I might re-post some older articles in order to fix their formatting.  Also, in the new design I tried to keep some of the old graphics in order to maintain some continuity and familiarity.  The new design is called “Syntax.”

Unexpected Sunset at Rib Mt

Passing through Wausau on my way home from a business trip, I decided to stop at Rib Mountain State Park to get in a little hiking.  Since it had been cloudy most of the day, I considered whether to take my camera.  Figuring this would be just an outdoor, exercise, and fresh autumnal air hike without the possibility of any reasonably good pictures, I decided to take my camera anyway.

While hiking on the quarry trail, the sun came out in glorious warm orange, lighting up the autumnal leaves of the trees and the forest floor.  A man and his dog jogged by, and commented on the wonderful light.  It was a nice reminder of the grace and mercy of God.

“Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun” (Ecclesiastes 11:7, KJV).

IMG_3204

I would have taken some pictures of the actual sunset, but I kept dithering about returning to the car.  The leaf covered trail I had taken to this spot had been hard to follow even in the daylight.  (I had considered turning back a number of times before the sun came out.  But when the sun came out, I felt compelled to keep going).  Nonetheless, the last thing I wanted to do was stumble back on that rocky, meandering, leaf covered trail in the dark.  There were a lot of leaves still on the trees, and a cloudy starless night in the forest can be very dark.  I had a flashlight, but was uncertain of the strength of its batteries.

Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:  But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many.”  (Ecclesiastes 11:7-8, KJV).

In all your days, may you rejoice with discerning eyes.

Notes

In case you were wondering, I did safely return just as the last usable light of the day had ended.

Also, have a blessed Reformation Day.

365 Days on Flickr

One of the activities photographers engage in on Flickr is creating a photo set with one picture from every day of the year.  This helps photographers to expand their skills by challenging their abilities to shoot in different kinds of light and under different conditions.

The two pictures above were both taken at Hartman Creek in Wisconsin, on the same warm October day.  Evergreens are always colorful and photogenic.

However, not every tree is an evergreen, so sharing a beautiful photo from every day of the year in Wisconsin would be a challenge, especially if one is not particularly into self-portraiture.  Even though every day does have its own kind of beauty, some months might consist of 29 pictures of gray.

Sometimes beauty is hidden.

One October Day in the Kettle Moraine Forest:

Maybe someday I will attempt a 365 day photo project, but in the meantime I have decided that I should better utilize Flickr by posting and sharing more photographs.  The pictures below are all from one day in the Kettle Moraine Forest near New Fane, Wisconsin.

Here, a single-track mountain bike trail winds its way through the golden Kettle Moraine Forest.  In Wisconsin, October is a colorful month, and some days are worth more than one photo.

Above, a fiery warm sunset illuminates golden trees in the Kettle Moraine Forest.  The sun is at our back.

Below are three pictures of trees from the other side, with the sun towards the front of the camera:

Autumn leaves, filled with golden sunlight, glow against a dark background.

Sometimes, I think the lives of Christians are like those leaves: just as the leaves are filled with and reflect the physical light of the sun, so also our lives are filled with and reflect the spiritual light of the Son of God.

If “anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”  (Philippians 4:8, NIV 1984).

Even if one does not take a beautiful picture every day; in Christ, every day is still a good day.
